Reading by Booklight

Hi everyone!! This is a way overdue blog that I can't wait to write. We've undergone not just one but two new computer systems in the past three weeks here at the bookstore so I'm happy that things have calmed down enough or me to be doing this. The plus side of all of this is that I've had a lot of time to read. Some of my new favorites have just come out so I can't wait to share them with you, I even created a display to celebrate one of the titles.

Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
This is definitely a staff favorite for the fall season. The story begins with a teenage girl,Victoria, who is on the verge of being released into "the real world", in other words life outside of the foster system. Telling Victoria's story from childhood through early adulthood you find someone who has been so hurt by others that she finds it nearly impossible to care about anything around her. When Elizabeth comes into her life things begin to change. When Elizabeth learns that Victoria has a fascination with flowers she begins teaching her the Victorian language of flowers where each flower has a meaning. Through this language Victoria finds a way to communicate with those around her in a way she feels comfortable. Above all this novel is about different types of love that we all have for each other. This is an excellent book for discussion and I highly recommend it.

I'm Not the Biggest Bitch in This Relationship by Wade Rouse
On a much lighter note this is a hilarious collection of stories by famous author dog owners edited by Wade Rouse (At Least in the City Someone Would Hear Me Scream). This set of stories celebrates life with our favorite shoe-eating, bed-hogging, impossible-to-train friends; dogs. Dog lovers who read this will find solace in knowing that there are others out there having experiences just like their own, both frustrating and funny. This book is perfect for a nice break from heavy books, it was really hard for me to put down because each story is more funny than the last. P.S. Wade Rouse is going to be at Boswell's on Downer this Thursday September 15 at 7pm, if you haven't met him before he's awesome and brings surprises too!

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
Alice Love has hit a very stressful point in her life; her relationship with her children is strained, she is getting a divorce and she is in over her head volunteering. When Alice hits her head and has amnesia all of this stress goes away. Alice Love is a pregnant newlywed 29 year old who loves her husband dearly and doesn't have a care in the world. Alice is in her own little world so to say and is very confused why everyone demands so much of her! This bump on the head may give Alice a fresh outlook on her life much to the dismay of her family and friends. The more Alice learned about the "new" Alice who was stressed and impatient she wanted to keep her amnesia and be the fun, sweet Alice she used to be. Sometimes it takes accidents like these to make us slow down in life. This is a very funny and charming look at what it would be like to forget everything.

Enjoy your latest read and I hope you add one of these ( or all!) to your reading pile.
