Awakening by Kate Chopin ( banned for reasons not listed) This is the story of Mrs. Pontellier, a young married woman who isn't sure she has found what she wants from life. The Aw
akening takes place during the turn of the century in New Orleans and starts with a summer vacation that a small group of families take each year together. It is on this vacation that Mrs. Pontellier begins to notice a young man that takes an intense interest in her when her husband is failing to do so. She also begins to think more about what she wants in life, does she really want or need to be a mother or wife, is she happy? All of these questions swirl in her head as she goes through her everyday routines and ultimately has to come to a decision about her life. For a short story it makes a bold statement about the life of women during that period in time and about the decisions many of us have to make about our own happiness and future. I'm excited that the In-Store Bookclub picked this as their November read because there is so much to discuss in it. I think it is a book that will always be timely because of the topics brought up that so many of us deal with in our lives.Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury ( reason for banning unknown)
I know this novel is a banned book but I truly have no idea why, my only guess can be for violence or how scary it can be. In my opinion this is one of the most
beautifully written books I've ever read. The descriptions that Bradbury writes of the sleepy town and library as well as the 2 little boys are like none other I've read. If you haven't read it "Something Wicked" is about 2 little boys who are so excited for the circus to come to town they start snooping around the grounds and spying on the actors and rides. They are confronted by a man named Cougar and Mr. Dark who run the circus and thus begins an exciting yet terrifying story of what happens when you're too curious for your own good. Mr. Dark as well as Will's father, the quiet janitor at the library are two of the most interesting and exciting characters I've ever read. This book will definitely keep you up late!Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie ( banned for language, racism, sexual talk, alcoholism and violence) I won't disagree that yes this book does have all of
these things but in my opinion not to the extent of whatever will be reported on Fox News tonight at 10pm. This book is about the struggle of an Native American boy living on a reservation who decides to attend the white high school off the reservation. "True Diary" is loosely based on the childhood experiences of Sherman Alexie and I think really shows what children growing up on reservations face in their lives. I read this book on recommendation from a fellow book lover and haven't stopped suggesting it to others since. This is one of those books that will make you laugh, cry and want to fight on behalf of this young boy who is struggling to find out how to make it out of his teen years alive. This book really should be read in high schools because there can be such a great discussion from it, all of the reasons this book is banned are all reasons that can be discussed! If you're wondering, the rest of his books are great too :)Now for your "homework" from me, post in the comments section of the blog what you're favorite banned books are and why; have fun with it!
Happy reading,
Morgan
