Reading by Booklight

Greetings!! Welcome to my second blog in 2 weeks, yay for being on schedule! I hope many of you were able to get some good banned book reading in last week, I know I did. I'm really excited for the books I'm talking about this week mainly because we are hosting author Erin Morgenstern of Night Circus this Tuesday October 4th at 7pm. Erin is an up and coming author with a ton of talent that stems from her artistic background. I decided to pick an "adventure" theme for this weeks blog, you'll see what I mean when you read through the reviews. So here we go...

Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Reminiscent of Something Wicked This Way Comes, the Night Circus is a show that appears overnight in a town. This town could be anywhere around the world, it travels under the cover of night and is constructed without notice. The story begins with two master illusionists who begin training two younger students of their own in order to have a "duel" of talents. These two students, Marco and Celia, do not know each other but are told it is up to them to find each other and begin this contest of illusion. The author paints of portrait of a beautifully dramatic circus colored in only black and white with various curiosities and highly talented and trained performers. This is a hard book to describe to be honest because it is about so much; illusion, love, competition. This is a mix of Ray Bradbury and sophisticated Harry Potter. If anything read this book for the descriptions of the tents alone, they're breathtaking. Please come and meet Erin Morgenstern on Tuesday October 4 at 7pm and don't forget " the circus is coming..."

Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson
This book is so much fun! Imagine having an eccentric and artsy aunt that passes away leaving you a job: to open 13 letters one at a time while traveling all over the world. There are 4 rules to traveling according to Aunt Peg: 1) you may only bring a backpack, everything must in it 2)no guidebooks, phrase books or foreign language dictionaries 3)no extra money, she provide it via debit card 4)no electronics ie laptops, cell phones, cameras, internet, etc. Try traveling with those rules! Ginny has always lived a very sheltered and "follow the rules" sort of life, that is until she receives this letter in the mail from her "runaway aunt" that recently passed away. Ginny must leave her comfort zone and enter into very uncharted territory, life outside her own with the only help being from 13 blue letters, a debit card and a few quirky friends along the way. The YA Bookclub had a lot of fun reading and discussing this one; we concluded "if only we had an Aunt Peg...".

When She Woke by Hillary Jordan
Remember that book Mudbound by Hilary? This is not that book. The author has taken a very different path with her latest novel much in the likes of Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale wit a touch of Orwell's 1984 and Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter. In a futuristic world criminals are punished by having their skin permanently dyed a color signifying the nature of their crime and being released into society with no protection from it. Hannah Payne knows she has made a mistake but it is one she feels she had no other choice to make; she fell in love with very powerful man and becomes pregnant so to save his reputation as well as her family's Hannah decides to secretly have an abortion. When her crime is discovered she is immediately taken into custody, dyed red for murder and released again. This novel is the story of Hannah's struggle to create a new life for herself, if it is ever possible. When a criminal is released their crime records as well as 24/7 whereabouts become public knowledge and unfortunately there are many people in her world that want Hannah dead for her crime. This book was really hard to put down because the author is able to write in such a way that makes a future like this seem not to far off from where we are now with our overflowing prisons and penitentiaries. This book will be great for book clubs and anyone wanting a highly discussable book!

I told you this would be an adventurous blog, enjoy everyone!!
~ Morgan
