Life on the Front Lines: Nine Tidbits You May Not Know About Our Store

Hi Readers,
A very happy new year to all of you.  I hope your resolutions are reasonable and that you're energized after the holidays.  Here at Next Chapter, we're looking forward to 2012 as a year of more books to read and recommend and authors to meet and promote.

I've been a Next Chapter Bookshop bookseller for almost six months; I'm still learning new tidbits about the store every day.  You, too, may not know these choice facts, so I present a list of nine things you should know about Next Chapter.

1. We feature published authors from Wisconsin and you buy their books, making them bestsellers in our store. You can find Lesley Kagen, Rochelle Melander, Julia Pandl, and Larry Watson on our paperback bestseller lists.

2. Our staff is fabulous. We have over 186 years of bookselling experience between the lot of us. We  all read different genres from childcare to business to graphic novels to teen books to poetry. Even if it's not our favorite topic, we delight in recommending a book from the section of your choice.

3. If you register your bookclub with us (a complimentary service), you can get 15% off of the book your bookclub is reading, and we'll make sure it's in stock.  Find more information here.

4. We just started a new thriller section.  For all of the Patterson, Ludlum, Grisham, and Iles fans, your books are all in one spot now.  Look through it when you visit, you might just find a new favorite author.

5. Our staff pick shelves are a great place to start if you're looking for a book that not everyone else has read.  We have eclectic taste and tend to put the books that we love the most on those shelves.  For example, the Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway is my favorite book of all time and has a permanent spot on my staff pick shelf.

6. We buy secondhand books on Saturdays from 10-2 and give you store credit for them. We primarily buy fiction, history, and biography books that have been published in the last 5 years. We then sell these books to you for a fraction of what they cost new.

7. We still have a snitch hiding in the store.  For those of you who are not huge Harry Potter fans, the snitch is the little golden ball that the Seekers look for in Quidditch.  Stop by and see if you can find it.  I don't know where it is, so I'll be looking too.

8. We're a member of IndieBound, a nation-wide consortium of independently owned book stores.  Our hardcover bestseller list is generated from the sales of all of the stores who are part of IndieBound, which is why it's often different from the New York Times bestsellers list.  We also have a shelf devoted to the Indie picks of the last three months.

9. We're always fine-tuning the set-up of the store so that you can have a better shopping experience.  We just took out a shelf so that there's more browsing space around the bestsellers.  We frequently change our displays so that there's always something new to catch your eye.  If you ever have a problem finding something, please ask us and we'll show you to your book.

Do you have any tidbits to add?  I'd welcome more in the comments section.  I'm sure long-time shoppers have a wealth of ideas.

Happy reading!
Hannah
