Reading by Booklight

Hi everyone and happy February!  We're only a few months to spring, yay!!  I'm already thinking of flowers and vegetables to plant, I can't wait.  I have to say though that February (although cold and slightly wet) has a great number of books that have been released.  I've already talked about a two of these titles when they first came out last year but they're out in paperback and I'm still just as excited about them!  Plus we have two new titles that have just been released that are great.  So here we go...

Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown
Rose (Rosalind), Bean (Bianca) and Cordy (Cordelia) are sisters that were all named for Shakespeare's famous women. The only problem with they all feel destined to their namesake's fate. While the girls have all attempted to take very different paths from each other they all end up at the same place, home. Each woman has secrets and demons they are trying to come to terms with as well as the fact that they are a) living at home again as adults b) caring for their sick mother and c) together again as sisters and still not getting along. When the girls realize that they are back at home for more reasons than caretaking for their mother they start to take a closer look at not just each other but themselves. I think my favorite character is their father, a Shakespeare professor who's only means of communication is through quoting Will. A great read for those who loved In Her Shoes by Jennifer Weiner just for the complicated love of sisters.

Preacher by Camilla Lackberg
This is the second installment in Lackberg's fast paced mystery that takes place in the small Swedish coastal town of Fjallbacka.  In this latest mystery there has been a big string of missing women with more bodies turning up than the local police station is comfortable with.  As this small town begins to panic with a murderer being on the loose detective Patrik Hedstrom knows that they need to work fast because he has a feeling another body will turn up quickly if they don't.  As always there are many interesting twists and turns involving long held family secrets and religious beliefs that run deep.  One of the things that I enjoy most about this mystery is that Detective Patrick shows up again as does his now girlfriend, writer Erica Falck, two characters that really complement each other in many ways.  This book kept me up late many nights, both with the chills as well as the inability to put it down without reading just one more chapter...

Good American by Alex George
This is a novel of our ancestors and their idea of the "great American dream".  As young newlyweds Frederick and Jette leave their home country of Prussia to pursue a new life together and find their American dream.  What they didn't realize was how hard it was going to be to achieve their dream.  Because of this they each make their own secret sacrifices for the sake of their family and life in the new world.  Starting with the birth of their first child and moving through their first house, jobs and through the generations they come to learn how hard one must work in order to get what they want even though that may change over the years.  This is truly a story of how our families started; what it was like for immigrants to come to America and start a new life.

I hope this gives you some great ideas for new reads, maybe now we can all read in a comfy chair by a window instead of a lamp :)  (I'm just very excited for this sunshine, can you tell??)
Happy reading!!
Morgan
